How paying works on Rento: the part online, the rest at pick-up, and the deposit

By Rento · Updated Oct 30, 2026

The short answer

You pay in two parts. A part online, when you book: the booking is confirmed the moment it goes through. The rest — the rental, your extras and any airport delivery fee — you pay the company when you collect the car.

A security deposit, if the company takes one, is the company’s, not Rento’s. It is held at pick-up and returned when you bring the car back. How much it is, and whether it goes on a card or is paid in cash, is the company’s rule, so ask before you book.

Two parts: now and at pick-up

Pay nowWhat it isA part of the rental. It confirms your booking.Who you payRento, online, when you book
At pick-upWhat it isThe rest of the rental, plus extras and any airport delivery fee.Who you payThe rental company, when you collect the car
The worked example in our Terms (§ 7): a €550 rental is €50 paid online when you book and €500 paid to the company at pick-up. Your checkout shows the real split for your car before you pay.

The checkout shows both amounts before you pay, and your trip shows Paid online and Due at pick-up afterwards (what you pay now and at pick-up).

Paying online

  • On a secure payment page. Card details are entered on our payment provider’s page, Stripe’s, never on Rento.
  • 20 minutes. We hold your dates for 20 minutes while you pay (Terms § 6).
  • Confirmed at once. The booking is confirmed the moment the payment goes through, with no waiting for the company to reply.
  • Not sure it went through? Don’t pay again. We confirm your booking or refund you in full, and email you either way.
  • The invoice is on your trip, under the payment, and in the payment email.

Pay for your booking covers the rest, including what to do if a payment fails.

At pick-up

You pay the company the rest of the rental, your extras and any airport delivery fee. Whether you pay it by card or in cash is up to the company; ask if it matters to you.

Bring your driving licence, and your ID card or passport if you haven’t verified your ID on Rento (on pick-up day).

The security deposit

A deposit, if the company takes one, is held at pick-up and returned when you bring the car back. Rento doesn’t take or hold vehicle deposits; the rental company does (Terms § 13).

If the car page doesn’t show a deposit, ask the company before you book. Deposit in the chat writes “How much is the deposit?” for you; once you have booked, it asks “How much is the deposit, and how do I pay it?”

  • How much, and whether it is a hold on a card or paid in cash.
  • When it comes back after you return the car.
  • What can be taken from it, and how you will know.

After the trip, Deposit refund in the chat asks “When will I get my deposit back?”

Changing or cancelling

A booking you haven’t paid for you can cancel yourself, and the dates are released straight away.

A paid booking is final: neither you nor the company can cancel or change it in the app or on the website. Rento support can: we sort it out with the company and tell you what you get back (cancel or change a booking). What is refunded is set out in our Terms (§ 16).

Questions people ask

Do I pay the whole rental online?

No. You pay a part online to confirm the booking and the rest to the rental company when you collect the car. The checkout shows both amounts before you pay.

How much is the deposit?

Each company sets its own. If the car page doesn’t show it, ask the company in the chat on the car page: Deposit writes “How much is the deposit?” for you.

Can I pay the deposit or the rest in cash?

That is the company’s choice: each takes card or cash on its own terms. Ask before you book if it matters to you.

Who holds my deposit?

The rental company. Rento doesn’t take or hold vehicle deposits.

What if my payment fails?

Try again while there is time left; the booking waits in Trips as Awaiting payment. Not sure a payment went through? Don’t pay again: we confirm the booking or refund you in full, and email you either way.

Can I cancel a paid booking?

Not in the app or on the website. Contact Rento support: we sort it out with the company and tell you what you get back.
